Last year, studios continued to cut the amount of money they spent on new TV shows. Some strikes effectively shut down Hollywood for several months, disrupting new releases of television shows and films.

And yet Americans kept streaming.

The time people spend watching streaming services from their TV sets last year has increased by 21 percent from 2022, according to a year-end review on streaming trends by media research firm Nielsen. There were nearly one million television shows and movies for Americans to choose from across more than 90 streaming services.

What did they see? It turns out there have been a lot of reruns.

But the share of older shows grew even more last year. For example, “Friends” is projected to reach 14 billion minutes of streaming time in 2022. The original shows were less popular. Last year, the 10 most-watched original shows were watched for 134 billion minutes, which is 32 percent less than the top 10 originals in 2022.
